Expertise That Goes Beyond the Surface

Many organisations in South Africa face regulatory environments that shift quickly, governance pressures that intensify, and strategic crossroads that demand more than generalist opinion. Hartwell & Pemberton was founded in Pretoria in 2009 specifically to address that gap. Our advisers have worked across listed corporates, state-owned entities, and mid-sized private businesses, bringing sector knowledge that is broad enough to connect the dots and deep enough to spot what others miss. The azure-trust palette of our practice reflects the clarity and confidence we aim to deliver: no ambiguity, no hedged language, no advice designed to cover all bases while committing to none. When you brief us on a matter, you receive a considered position — and the reasoning behind it.

Four Disciplines, One Integrated Advisory Team

Hartwell & Pemberton operates across consulting, advisory, audit, and compliance — allowing us to address interconnected challenges without handoff delays.

Strategic Consulting

From market-entry analysis to organisational restructuring, our consulting practice brings structured frameworks and South African market intelligence to bear. We work alongside leadership teams to identify options, stress-test assumptions, and produce recommendations that hold up to board scrutiny.

Independent Advisory

When a transaction, partnership, or structural decision requires impartial expert opinion, our advisory team provides the independent view. We have no product to sell and no house position to protect — only the obligation to give you our best professional judgement.

Operational Audit

Our audit work examines operational processes, internal controls, and governance structures against recognised standards. We document findings with precision and present management with a prioritised remediation roadmap, not a lengthy report that sits unread on a shelf.

Regulatory Compliance

South Africa's regulatory landscape spans POPIA, B-BBEE codes, FICA, JSE rules, and sector-specific frameworks. Our compliance practice helps you understand current obligations, identify gaps, and build internal controls that satisfy regulators without paralysing operations.

Hartwell & Pemberton reviewed our internal controls ahead of a regulatory inspection in early 2023. Their audit team identified three process gaps we had overlooked for years, and their remediation guidance was specific enough that our operations manager could act on it the following Monday. The inspection concluded without findings.

What Working with Us Actually Looks Like

An engagement with Hartwell & Pemberton begins with a structured discovery conversation — not a sales call. We ask precise questions about your situation, your constraints, and the decision you are trying to make. From that, we propose a defined scope of work with clear deliverables and a realistic timeline. We do not run indefinitely open retainers with vague output; each mandate has a purpose and an end state. Where ongoing advisory relationships make sense, we structure them around quarterly review cycles with documented outputs. Our Pretoria office handles coordination, but engagements regularly extend across Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and other commercial centres. We should also be transparent about limits: we do not provide legal representation, we do not act as external auditors for listed-company financial statements, and outcomes in regulatory matters always depend in part on factors outside any adviser's control.

Questions Clients Often Ask Before Engaging Us

How is a typical engagement scoped and priced?

Every mandate begins with a no-obligation discovery conversation. From that, we draft a scope-of-work document that defines the deliverables, the timeline, and a fixed or capped fee. We avoid open-ended retainers unless the client's situation genuinely requires ongoing advisory cover, in which case we structure quarterly reviews with clear output schedules.

Do you work with organisations outside Pretoria?

Yes. While our principal office is in Pretoria, the majority of our engagements involve clients headquartered in Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban. We work on-site when the nature of the mandate requires it and remotely where that is more efficient. Travel arrangements and any associated costs are agreed upfront.

Which regulatory frameworks does your compliance team cover?

Our compliance practice covers POPIA, FICA, B-BBEE verification and strategy, JSE Listings Requirements, King IV governance principles, and a range of sector-specific frameworks in financial services, healthcare, and construction. If a specific framework is not listed, please enquire — our network of specialist associates extends our coverage significantly.

Is the firm independent — do you have affiliations that could create conflicts?

Hartwell & Pemberton is an independently owned advisory firm with no affiliations to audit networks, financial product providers, or law firms that could create conflicts of interest. Before accepting any mandate, we conduct a formal conflict-of-interest review and disclose the outcome to the prospective client in writing.

What should I prepare before the first conversation?

You do not need to prepare a formal brief. A paragraph describing the situation, the decision you face, and your approximate timeline is sufficient for us to assess fit and propose next steps. The first conversation is confidential and carries no obligation to proceed.
